Captain Greg Francis' Fishing Reports

12/28 & 12/29 Fishing Report

The last 2 days on West Bay have been windy windy. Friday was the first day that I was out on the water since my Christmas break. I decided to brave the brutal 20 knot north wind and go out and do some scouting by myself. I was surprised to see the tides were up a little high since the last trip. On the first drift I found a few Trout in the 18" range and a few throw back reds. This was around the North Deer area. The Trout seem to be right were I left them biting 5 days ago. Moved over and worked some mud streaks in front of Pats Pass next. I found some more solid Trout that averaged around 17" on black/char Assassins rigged on 1/8 lead heads and black Mirrolures.  The wind started backing off at noon and the afternoon turned out beautiful. Ended the day at 3 with 1 limit of Trout.

Saturday we had easterly winds in the 15 to 18 knot range with cloudy conditions. The bite was a little tougher Saturday with poorly moving tides. I had a party of 3 but the catching just wasn't there for us. We ended the day with 13 keeper Trout and another handful of schoolie Trout and Rat Reds. With the tides not moving that good in our favor I had a hard time finding concentrations of Trout and could not locate any mud streaks. This ended up being a 1 trout here and there kind of day. Plum/char Assassins and black Norton Sand Eel jrs accounted for most of the Trout.

Tight Lines and a Happy New Year

The fishing around Galveston remains HOT!!!!! Today we continued to catch nice keeper Trout in our normal winter time areas. Drifting off-colored water in depths of 3 to 5' continues to be the pattern and WILL continue for the next few months. Bass Assassins continue to score limits of Trout from 16 to 23' worked slowly over mud and scattered shell. Today we boxed 20 Trout and had solid action during periods of the in or outgoing tides.

Well..... As predicted the last cold front we had really got the Trout bite heating up. The first day we got out on the water with my party of 3 we ended up boxing 15 Trout and 1 Red. The water temps really dropped after the passing of the front and with the high northerly winds the water depths dropped aswell concentrating alot of Trout. We found some good Trout action in 5 to 6' of water throwing Saltwater Assassins in black with chartreuse tails. With the cooler water temps the baits had to be worked extremely slow. Yesterday I had a party of 3. Things started out a little slow for us but once the wind picked up a little bit we found some solid Trout action drifting over off-colored water in depths of 3 to 5'. Plum/char Assassins and solid black 52 series Mirrolures were the ticket. Trout yesterday were running 16 to 20' with our 2 biggest going at 23' and weighing in at close to 4lbs.

Winter is here and I expect some awesome winter time action for the next 3 months. See ya'll on the water.

12/15/07 Fishing Report

For the past 2 weeks fishing has been fair at best. We are catching a lot of fish but we are seeing a lot of smaller Trout (13 to 14' class). An average day right now is 10 to 15 keeper Trout in the 16 to 21' class with 1 or 2 keeper Reds and the occasional Flounder. Most of the fishing as of late has been drift fishing from the boat drifting over scattered shell/mud in depths of 4 to 6' of water in Galveston's Upper West Bay. Soft plastic Bass Assassins in plum/char, Red shad, Fire tiger, and Limetreuse rigged on 1/8 or 1 1/16 once lead heads have been the most effective. Solid black Mirrolures and the mullet pattern Mirrolure has also accounted for a few fish as well.  The water temps have been in the 60's but with today's passing front the water temps will be back in the 50's by Saturday.  This front today will put the fish back in a typical winter time pattern and the fishing should really be picking back up by the first part of next week.

Winter time can be a great time to get out on the water and experience some awesome catches of nice Speckled Trout.
