Friday 5/30/08 Fishing Report

  Location: West Galveston Bay
Weather: Partly Cloudy
Wind: 15 to 20 south southeast
Water clarity: Clear early turing sandy after noon
Water temp: 80
Tides: normal (4 tide day)
Baits: Topwaters & soft plastics
Fishing: POOR-fair-good-great

Fished Lower West Bay Friday under stiff southerly winds and a very poor moving tide Friday morning. The water was in great shape but the bite never got going in our favor. We had a small topwater bite from 730am to 830am but that was about it. Picked up a few solid Trout in the lower 20' range on blue/chrome She Dogs and plum colored Saltwater Assassins working around sandbars near the San Luis Pass area. Trout and Reds came in water ranging from 1' to 3' of water working around Mullet and a few slicks. Ended the day around noon with 8 or 9 Trout, 1 Red, and 1 Flounder.

Saturday 5/31/08 Fishing Report

  Location: West Galveston Bay
Weather: Partly cloudy
Wind: 10 to 15 south
Water temp: 80
Tides: (4 tide day)
Baits: Topwaters and plastics
Fishing: Poor-FAIR-good-great

Met up with James, Corey,Rob, and Brian at the 2004 Bridge and headed off to West Bay. We started off working around the pass covering an area that had some slicks and some rafting Mullet. Corey popped a big Trout early that topped his personal best, this Trout was just shy of 27'. The bite was not fast and furious but we did have some solid blowups to some solid hefty Trout. Our first wade produced 16 Trout and 1 Red. Only 1 Trout went under 20' and it was right at 18. Considering the very weak tidal movement we had the bite was better than expected. The best bite occured between 730 to 830am. After that it was a steady grind the rest of the day picking up a few scattered Trout here and there. My best Trout came around 230 on a chrome blue back She Dog in knee deep water right on the tide change. She measured in at 24'. Trout came on Chrome She Dogs, Char/pearl/sil Super Spooks, and bone Super spook jrs. Ended the day around 3 with 23 Trout with only 4 comming under 20' and 1 Red. It was a definate day of grinding that paid off with some solid fish.

Fishing this past weekend was a little tough, as no big catches were brought back to the docks. High northerly winds from a small passing front late last week really hurt our water conditions and made bays very rough in the area. Monday things settled down some and West Bay started settling back down until mid morning when the winds shifted to the west causing the water to dirty right back up. Yesterday we found a really good bite around the San Luis Pass on the strong incoming tide. By 9am we had 30 Trout to 4lbs only keeping about 20 of them. Trout came on a mix of topwater bait and soft plastic Bass Assassins worked around fresh slicks, bait fish, and working birds. As we get closer into June I expect the winds to start being more cooperative and the bays will be in great shape. The end of May and the month of June will still offer up plenty of very excellent fishing in the boat or out. I am expecting an awesome month in June for some some awesome topwater fishing. Come join in on the fun!

The fishing the last 2 days has been fair at best. We have had some fishable water around the pass early the last two days but it quickly goes to crap with the strong incoming tide. The first two hours of the morning have been critical in catching Trout and Reds at the pass. Friday we managed Two Trout to 21' and 1 26' Red before the water condition went south on us. We had a handful of blowups but only landed the three fish. Once the conditions turned we were forced to go find greener pastures elsewhere. For this I elected to hit a few shell pads located around Chocolate Bay. For the past week or two we have been catching some nice Trout on some of these little shell pads. Friday my party scratched out 11 Trout to 20" bouncing soft plastic Bass Assassins in plum/char and Red Shad in color in 15 knot southerly wind. My party/team was fishing a tourney (Houston Mariners Association) were we ended the day placing 4th out of 20 teams. We had a tough bite but we did manage to scratch out 14 fish.
Today we started off in a new location not to far from where we started off Friday. This location had way more active surface bait a a lot of fresh slicks popping up everywhere. It didn't take long at all before I bowed up with a big Redfish that eventually spit the Super Spook I was chunking. Two cast later the same bait was crushed by another fish that turned out to be a big Trout that measured in at 26'. She was released for another day. About 5 minutes later one of my party members connected with a solid 22' Trout that just hammered his smaller surface plug. The bite went south quickly as once again the strong moving incoming  tide brought dirty water with it. ended up with 5 or 6 Trout on our morning session at the pass. The rest of the morning we waded around shell pads picking up scattered Trout to 20' on plum Assassins. Finished the day with 16 or 17 Trout.

Capt. Cody and Capt. Mike, also with Saltwater Assault both ran trips Friday in the basic same areas as myself and faired about the same. 10 to 15 fish seems to be the average right now. Once water clarity settles I look for the pass to be on fire. Get those topwaters ready!!!

Fishing here on the Galveston Bay complex has been great. We have been catching some nice stringers of Trout in both East Galveston Bay and West Galveston Bay. Wading with topwaters and soft plastics have been the ticket on Trout and Reds. We have been catching a few scattered Flounder in the mix aswell. Trout have been caught keying in on Trout slicks and working our baits near active schools of bait. We have been catching our fish early in very shallow water (1'to 2') then moving out a little deeper as the day warms up. Mid bay reefs are starting to produce some good quality fish too. Saturday we had some solid Trout to 21' working plum Assassins around shell pads in 2 to 3' of water. The wind has been causing a few problems lately but we have been getting in out of it by hiding in protected areas along the south shorelins. Spring time offers some of our best topwater action of the year and we catch some really nice stringers of fish during the months of May and June. If your looking to get on some of this explosive action give me a shout.
