Captain Mike Lowe's Fishing Reports

Cast and Blast! We hunted the south shoreline on the edge of one of the coves. Duck hunting was marginal at best so we decided to cast instead of blast. There were flocks of gulls everywhere. The first flock we pulled up on - we had seven trout in 10 minutes. Off to a good start...then mother nature put a halt to the day. By the time we got to the second flock of birds we were in the middle of driving rain with thunder and lightening. The birds actually kept working in the rain, so we caught a few more before the bad got worse.

Got a late start today due to the fog. There were boats everywhere. After stopping at three spots with boats at every spot, I decided to fish so unmarked shell on the north shoreline in about three feet of water. The fishing wasn't fast and furious, but it was steady. We fished there for two hours and caught eight trout. No big ones today.

This morning it was 36 degrees and the winds were north at 20 mph. WIth the wind wreaking havoc on most of the bay we sought refuge in the back waters of the south shoreline. It was hard wading to get to areas where redfish were working, but once we got there the action was outstanding. Out of the twenty reds we caught, we site casted eighteen of them - most being between 26-28 inches long with a handful being oversized. It was finesse fishing at its finest. Many reds were sitting in ambush points in the back waters. We were sneaking up on the bank and pitching the bait (Texas Red Killers) just past the reds and slowly bringing the bait in front of their nose and dropping it - all you would feel is a slight thump as the reds stayed motionless, but at the time of hook set it was like organized chaos. This has been the pattern I've been holding on everytime during a front. Pictured are Randy and Chris.

The day before a front, my favorite. This evening we went to one of the mid-bay reefs, anchored up, jumped out, and had our first fish on the second cast. The action didn't stop until we left. Small topwaters were the ticket. Most of the trout were in the 17-19 inch range with two around 24 inches. Perfect day.

The guys today were looking for trophy trout. We started out fishing north of Bird Island in mud. Randy hooked up with a big trout which eventually broke off. This was the fourth trout that broke off in the last three days. How unfortunate... We left there and moved to the south shoreline where we grinded it out for a few miles to no avail. We then shifted to one of the mid-bay reefs where the trout typically haven't been the size the guys were looking for. However, we ended up with a pretty good day, with ten good trout and a flounder. Throwing mainly Corky fat boys and Texas Trout Killers. Pictured is Kevin Baker with the best trout of the day - not a monster, but very respectable.
